I did my pediatric rotation at Queens Hospital Center. I did 2 weeks of pediatric ED, 1 week of pediatric clinic, and 1 week of NICU. I enjoyed my weeks at ED the most because I got to be very hands-on with almost every patient. I also liked that I can follow through with the patient from beginning to discharge. When I saw a patient assigned to my preceptor, I would start taking patient history, do physical exams, and then present the patient to the preceptor. I also had the opportunity to do many procedures, including splinting, placing an IV and venipuncture. During the week at the pediatric clinic, I was able to work with different attendings in different specialties. The specialties include pediatric primary care, adolescent, hematology, neurology, and cardiology. I especially enjoyed the cardiology clinic because I had the chance to see a fetal echocardiogram done on a pregnant patient and I got to interpret a few ECGs with the attending. I was at NICU during the last week of this rotation, and it was a very different experience. I would round with the providers in the morning and then go to vaginal or c-section deliveries. On my first day, it was very hard to keep up during rounds. I spent a lot of time going over patients’ charts and looking up diagnoses and treatments. The attending I met was very willing to teach and was very patient when I had questions. After doing research on each patient along with the attending‘s explanation, I understood more during rounds and learned a lot more. NICU was slower during the afternoon, so I had the chance to read a few articles that the attending recommended. The rotation itself is a wonderful learning experience. Aside from the rotation itself, I need to continue to read more for future rotations.
